Beware of job scams

The Department of Workforce Services reminds clients and job seekers to protect themselves against potential online scams that are seemingly more prevalent during the holiday season. The Department is working hard to make sure their clients take preventative measures to protect themselves.
Joan Evans, Director of the Department of Workforce Services, said there have been a few reported incidents regarding the Department’s online job matching system, wyomingatwork.com. “We’ve had a few reports of hackers posing as employers and then asking job seekers who are registered in our system to send identifying information to them or asking them to cash fraudulent pay checks. Hackers can then use those transactions to gain access to individual bank accounts.”
Some of the common scams that are related to employment sites include, but are not limited to, check cashing scams, re-shipping scams, work-at-home scams (such as envelope stuffing scams and a list of work-at-home jobs), and multi-level marketing (a.k.a. pyramid schemes), along with others.
Evans said, “It’s very disappointing that hackers are preying on job seekers at this time of year. We’re taking steps within the Department to contact those registered in our system and make them aware of these issues.”
There are steps that job seekers can take to better protect themselves from being a victim of fraudulent scams:
• Be cautious of any employer offering employment without an interview (either in person or by phone)
• Be cautious of employers who charge a fee
• Investigate thoroughly any employer requesting that funds be transferred
• Do not provide social security numbers or any sensitive information to an employer unless there is certainty that the employer is legitimate
• Be wary when replying to unsolicited emails for work-at-home employment
• Research companies to ensure they are authentic
• Contact the Better Business Bureau to determine the legitimacy of a company
Anyone who has been solicited for personal information and feels the request was not legitimate is encouraged to call 1-877-Work-Wyo.

RE: Beware of job scams
I recently got hired for a new job and I can say this is 100% correct. The amount of fake ads is insane. Although most I found were pretty obvious, wanting money for training and other such nonsense.
