“Official Guide to Facebook Security”
If we have a look at the number of people falling prey to Facebook scams then we can say that there’s some educating that needs to be done soon. It’s not at all a matter of common sense, as there are users who aren’t internet savvy and therefore need some guidance on that matter. Now Facebook has decided to cater this need by releasing a security guide titled “Official Guide to Facebook Security”. This guide aims to educate Facebook users about how to keep their accounts safe and secure.

The “Official Guide to Facebook Security” is certainly worth it once you see the team that worked together to make it. The team included Symantec Internet Safety expert, Linda McCarthy alongwith Keith Watson, a security researcher from Purdue University, and Denise Weldon-Siviy, a teacher and editor.

The guide, is as per the Facebook’s policy to publish their write ups in simple English and not that technical jargon filled stuff that other sites normally release.
You can download the “Official Guide to Facebook Security” from here...

In this guide, we can find tips on how to create a good password and what to do once you have it. It helps in making the passwords by following the the universal rule which is to make one that’s complex enough so that people can’t guess it and also meaningful enough that you never forget it. The guide also recommended some tools such as KeePass that would help you manage your passwords.

It also stresses the importance of logging out of your Facebook account when you’re done using it. Infact, this simple step is something that a lot of people forget. It’s ok if you’re the only one using your computer, but if you’re using a shared pc or a public computer, then you’re at a greater risk of getting your account hacked. Some people think that they are automatically logged out when they close the internet browser butremember this is not true and could have severe consequences.

The highlight of this guide, is the part where we are provided details on how to avoid scams. They have mentioned about the “Malicious Script Scam”, which is commonly seen in apps that promise to show you who viewed your profile. They have also mentioned about ‘clickjacking’, which is basically when users click something that makes their accounts share links unknowingly.

The guide also explains in full detail how to protect your Facebook accounts, what to do when your account is hacked, how to stop imposters, how to avoid scammers and how to handle the site’s security settings: in short all that you need to know about Facebook security. It’s 20 pages long and is well worth the read.
